CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia men’s lacrosse coach Dom Starsia announced today that nine student athletes have signed national letters of intent to enroll at UVa in the fall of 1998. All nine signed during the early signing period in November(12-19), and this group concludes the Fall phase of recruiting.

Todd Estrin is a 6-3, 205, midfielder from Cold Spring Harbor High School and Syosset, NY. He is captain of his lacrosse team. He also captained his two other varsity teams. A former CSH teammate, Jay Jalbert, is in his second year at UVa.

Conor Gill is a 6-2, 200, attackman from the the St. Paul’s School and Lutherville, MD. He is a three-sport captain, and he has broken all the scoring records set at St. Paul’s by former St. Paul’s and UVa All Americans Tim Whiteley and Michael Watson. Former Crusader teammates Tucker Radebaugh and Richard Reid are on the current UVa roster.

Derek Kenney is a 6-1, 185, goaltender from Stony Brook High School and Stony Brook, NY. He is a three sport captain and twice a Long Island Empire Team choice. He is the first Stony Brook grad to play for UVa.

Mark Koontz is a 6-2, 205, defenseman from Upper Arlington High School and Columbus, OH. He is a top honor roll student fullback/linebacker on his unbeaten, highly-ranked high school football team. He captains both football and lacrosse. His lacrosse team won last year’s league title.

Eric Leibowitz is a 6-1, 175, attackman/middie from Annandale High School and Annandale, VA. He captains both football and lacrosse, and his 105 points led the Atoms to an unbeaten state title season.

Jason Leneau is a 5-11, 175, defensive midfielder from the Boy’s Latin School and Eldersburg, MD. He is a three-sport captain, and he has former Laker teammates Ian Shure and Aaron Vercollone on the 1998 UVa roster.

Brenndan Mohler is a 6-2, 175, midfielder from Catonsville High School and Catonsville, MD. He captains three sports and was a Bay State Games selection last year.

Russ Myerberg is a 6-1, 180, defenseman from the Brunswick School and Greenwich, CT. He captains his football team and his lacrosse team had a 14-1 season in 1997.

Nick Russo is a 5-11, 185 midfielder from Comsewogue High School and Port Jefferson, NY. He captains his football team and he captained the 1997 Long Island Empire squad.

“I am most pleased to announce that our entire class has signed on in this early period. In recruiting, quicker only means better if it still involves the best players and this is an outstanding group. What stands out here is their range athletically, their leadership skills, and their academic record. This is a group of of young men who will define a large measure of our success over these next four years,” Starsia commented on the group of signings.

UVa finished the 1997 season at 11-3 losing to Maryland 10-9 on the Terps’ home field in the NCAA second round. UVa opens its 1998 season, Feb. 28 against Syracuse in Charlottesville.
