CHAPEL HILL, N.C.–North Carolina’s 12th-ranked men’s lacrosse team hung with the sixth-ranked Virginia Cavaliers for one quarter Saturday night,but when all was said and done, Coach Dom Starsia’s Wahoos emerged with15-4 Atlantic Coast Conference victory before 837 fans at Fetzer Field.

Trailing after one quarter 3-2, Virginia held North Carolina to only onegoal over the final period, while scoring 13 goals of its own.A goal by JayJalbert with 5:01 left before halftime gave the Cavaliers the lead for goodat 4-3 and Carolina would never seriously threaten again. Virginia was led by attackmen Jay Jalbert, Tucker Radebaugh and Drew McKnight, who ignited a ferocious Wahoo attack. Jalbert scored a career high five goals in the game. Radebaugh had four goals and one assist and McKnight chipped in with two goals and a trio of assists. Midfielder Drew Melchionni added a trio of goals and one assist for Virginia. His evening included both an extra-man and short-handed goal.

Carolina was led by midfielder Justin Bowman who had two goals andattackmen Chase Martin and Jeff Sonke who each had one goal and one assist.Virginia goalkeeper Chris Sanderson played extremely well,allowing only the four goals while making 11 saves. Carolina hurts itselfwith poor shooting accuracy. Only 15 of Carolina’s 39 shots were on goal,while the Wahoos repeatedly tested North Carolina goalie Jarron Harkness,who made 13 saves.

Virginia improved to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the ACC with thewin. The victory broke a two-game Cavalier losing streak. Carolina droppedto 3-6 overall and 0-3 in the ACC. The Tar Heels have dropped five of theirlast six games.

Virginia plays host to Duke next Saturday in Charlottesville,while Carolina plays at Delaware.
