Men's Soccer Blanks Adelphi in Coca-Cola Classic

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia’s Sam Franklin (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) converted a penalty kick after being fouled and notched his third game-winning goal of the season as the Cavaliers defeated the Adelphi Panthers 3-0 in the final game of the 1998 Coca-Cola Classic today.

Rob Wright (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) and Chris Albright (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter)also tallied goals for the Cavaliers, who held the Panthers to two shots on the day, both coming in the second half.

Franklin was knocked down during a corner kick and was awarded a penalty kick in the 36th minute, which he deposited in the lower right corner of the goal to put the Cavaliers up 1-0. Eight minutes later Wright redirected a Ryan Trout (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) shot into the same lower right corner to put Virginia up 2-0, which the teams took into halftime.

Ten minutes into the second half, Albright’s shot bounced over the Panther keeper into the net to put the Cavaliers up 3-0. Marshall Leonard (Midland, Ga./Shaw) was credited with an assist on the play.

Mike Forensich (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine) played all 90 minutes in goaay. Matt Chulis (Central Islip, N.Y./Islip), who directed the defense for the Cavaliers, was named to the All-Tournament team along with Franklin and Albright.

The Cavaliers return to action next Sunday as they travel to Clemson, S.C. to take on the ACC-rival Tigers. Game time is 2:00 pm. Clemson was ranked #1 earlier in the season.

In the day’s first game, Marshall claimed the 1998 title with a 2-1 overtime defeat of American. The Thundering Herd’s Tommy Greenawalt was named the tournament MVP with both of Marshall’s game-winning goals during the tournament. He was joined on the team by teammates Taly Goode, Keith Dumas, and Wayne Bennett. Other members of the team included Tom Donahue from Adelphi and Angel Lanchas, Scott Weber, and Trevor Ellis from American.
