Men's Tennis Advances to ACC Tournament Finals

ATLANTA — The University of Virginia men’s tennis team defeated North Carolina 4-2 in

the semifinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference men’s tennis tournament this afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center on the Georgia Tech campus. The win is Virginia’s second in a week over the Tar Heels as the Cavaliers advance to the finals of the ACC tournament for the first time ever. Virginia will play the winner of today’s other semifinal match between Duke and Florida State on Sunday at noon.

The Cavaliers upped their record to 16-6 overall this season in winning for the seventh time in the last eight matches. North Carolina falls to 14-8 overall.

Virginia started off by capturing the doubles point to take the important early lead. Virginia’s 3 team of John Winter and Tommy Croker clinched it for the Cavaliers by gaining a tough 9-7 triumph over Tripp Phillips and Eric Saunders.

QWinter (5) and Montgomery (2) won their singles matches to put Virginia closer to victory, while Brian Vahaly (1) and Hyon Yoo (4) dropped their matches.

Freshman Tommy Croker sealed the win for the Cavaliers with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Michael Grass at 6. Croker also clinched Virginia’s win over North Carolina last week as well.
