GREENVILLE, S.C.–The University of Virginia men’s tennis team continued its winning ways on its Spring Break trip with a 6-1 victory over Furman this afternoon at the Minor Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C. The Cavaliers improve to 8-3 this season, while the Paladins fall to 3-6.

The Cavaliers began by capturing the doubles point by winning two of three doubles matches. Freshmen Huntley Montgomery and Brian Vahaly snapped a one-match losing streak with a convincing 8-1 victory over Brian Gill and Drew Parker at #2. Virginia head coach Thomas Johnston shuffled his line-up at #3 and the move paid dividends. Kent Koch and Brian Hunter, playing together for the first time, gained an 8-5 win over Lee Nickell and Blake Peeper to earn the doubles point.

Virginia rolled through the singles, winning five of six matches. Vahaly, substituting for an injured Bear Schofield at #1, upset Sam Schroerlucke 6-2, 6-0. Schroerlucke is the nation’s 46th-ranked player.

Montgomery dropped the first set of his match at #2 to Adam Abney 2-6, but took the next two sets 6-4, 6-2 to claim victory.

Hyon Yoo ended a two-match losing streak with a 6-3, 7-6(5) win over Lee Nickell at #3. John Winter won for the 10th consecutive time by defeating Brian Gill 6-3, 6-1 at #4.
