CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA– The University of Virginia men’s tennis team opened its dual match season with a 5-2 win over Michigan late Saturday night at the Boar’s Head Tennis Club. The Cavaliers’ win was their first since over the Wolverines since 1948. They also avenged a 4-3 loss to Michigan last season.

Virginia got off to a good start by capturing the doubles point. UVa’s top tandem of Huntley Montgomery and Brian Vahaly picked up where they left off last season with an 8-2 win over Matt Wright and Danny McCain.

Vahaly, the nation’s second-ranked player, outlasted Wright in straight sets 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 for his second win of the day. Montgomery also picked up a singles win with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over John Long at #3.

Hyon Yoo at #4 and Tommy Croker at #5 both dropped their first set before coming back to win for Virginia.

The Cavaliers have several weeks off before returning to action on February 13 against Old Dominion.
