CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s tennis team continued its hot play this evening with a 6-1 win over visiting Richmond at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. The win was the fourth in a row for the Cavaliers and boosted their record to 5-1 this season. The Spiders fall to 5-5 this season with their second consecutive loss.

The Cavaliers got off to a fast start by sweeping the doubles to claim the doubles point. Freshmen Brian Vahaly and Huntley Montgomery teamed to defeat Scott Pfeiffer and Jason Kermode 8-3 at #1.

Virginia head coach Thomas Johnston was forced to juggle his doubles line-up somewhat, inserting Brian Hunter and Tommy Croker into the #3 spot. They responded with an 8-3 win over Alex Howard and Brock Parker in their first match together this spring.

Virginia got quick singles wins from Hyon Yoo at #3 and Montgomery at #4 to stretch its lead. Junior Kent Koch clinched the win for the Cavaliers with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Robert Flader at #6. Yoo’s win was his team-leading 16th victory of the season.

Bear Schofield and John Winter won at #2 and #5, respectively, as Virginia built its lead.

Pfeiffer prevented the Spiders from being shut out. He fought off Vahaly at #1 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in the final match of the evening for Richmond’s lone win.
