CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Playing its second match in as many days did not seemto bother the University of Virginia men’s tennis team as the Cavaliersdowned Virginia Tech 5-2 today at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center. The5-2 margin is the biggest margin in the series since a 5-2 UVa victory in1995. Coming into today’s match, the last three meetings between the twostate rivals and five of the last six had been decided by a single point.

As has been typical recently, the Cavaliers gained the early advantage bywinning the doubles point. In a match-up of ranked teams, Virginia’s23rd-ranked duo of Huntley Montgomery and Brian Vahaly downed the Marchettibrothers, Aaron and Adam, the 30th-ranked team in the nation, 8-2 at #1.Virginia claimed the doubles point as Tommy Croker and John Winter wontheir 11th match in a row by an 8-3 count over Davor Dupljak and GrantSemon at #2.

In singles, Tommy Croker and Hyon Yoo were first off for the Cavaliers asUVa pushed the lead to 3-0. Croker downed Eddie Terzimehic 6-4, 6-3 at #5for his sixth win in his last seven matches. Yoo remained hot as well witha 6-2, 6-4 win over Davor Dupljak at #4 for his sixth win in a row.

The Hokies drew closer as Aaron Marchetti, the nation’s 14th-ranked player,downed Brian Vahaly, ranked 17th nationally, 6-2, 7-6 at #1.

With three matches in progress, Brian Hunter wasted little time in endingthe drama by clinching the win for Virginia with a 6-4, 7-5 win over JayBruner at #6.

Huntley Montgomery handed #33 Adam Marchetti just his seventh loss of theyear with a 7-6, 6-3 win at #2. Tech’s Niels Oggesen closed out the matchwith a 4-6, 7-6, 7-5 win over John Winter at #3.
