Men's Tennis Downs Wake Forest in ACC Tournament

NORCROSS, GA-The University of Virginia men’s tennis team advanced to thesemifinals of the ACC Championships following a 4-0 win over Wake Forestlate Friday night. The Cavaliers, the tournament’s fourth seed, haveadvanced to the semifinals the last four years, including a first-ever tripto the finals last season. With the win the Cavaliers improve to 14-8overall, while Wake Forest falls to 11-15.
The Cavaliers continued their impressive doubles play by winning two ofthree doiubles matches to claim the doubles point. This marked the 19thtime in 22 dual matches this spring that the Cavaliers have won the doublespoint to start the match. Virginia’s sophomore tandem of Huntley Montgomeryand Brian Vahaly, ranked 22nd nationally, upset the nation’s eighth-rankedteam of Myles Clouston and Raul Munoz 8-3 at #1. The win was Virginia’s #1doubles team’s second over the Demon Deacon duo in less than a week.
Brian Hunter and Hyon Yoo avenged a loss to Wake Forest’s Johan Hansen andAndres Guzman last weekend by winning in a tiebreaker 9-8 (7) to give thepoint to Virginia.
Virginia made quick work of the Demon Deacons in singles. Vahaly continuedhis hot play with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Clouston at #1, while Montgomerydowned Munoz by the same scores at #2.
Tommy Croker, the ACC Champion at #5, clinched the match for Virginia witha 6-4, 7-6(3) win over Brett Mauro. Croker has won 10 of his last 11matches.
The Cavaliers face top-seed Duke in the semifinals on Saturday at 2 p.m.
