RICHMOND, Va. — The third-seeded University of Virginia men’s tennis team lost to top-seeded South Carolina 4-2 at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Thalhimer Tennis Center on Sunday (May 17) in the championship match of the NCAA Region II Tournament.

Virginia finishes the 1998 season with an overall record of 18-8. South Carolina is now 21-7.

South Carolina’s Olof Akesson defeated UVa’s Bear Schofield 6-7, 6-3, 6-0 in the deciding match in the #4 singles competition.

Brian Vahaly (#1) and John Winter (#5) won singles matches for Virginia. South Carolina won the doubles point and three singles matches to defeat the Cavaliers.
