Men's Tennis Places Three on All-Conference Team

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–Virginia’s Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) was picked as the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year for 1997-98 in a vote of the league’s head coaches as announced yesterday by the conference. He was also named to the All-Conference team along with fellow first-year Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill). Montgomery and Vahaly were the ACC Doubles Champions at #2, posting a perfect 8-0 record in the conference regular season. Virginia’s Paige Boiko (Miami, Fla./Palmetto) was also named to the All-Conference team. It was the first selection to the All-Conference team for all three players.

Vahaly, ranked 62nd in the latest ITA national rankings, is the first Cavalier to be named Rookie of the Year. He compiled an overall record of 19-9 in the spring while seeing action at #1, #2, and #4. Vahaly was 6-2 in league competition, including 2-0 at #2.

Montgomery stands at 26-12 on the season and has a record of 6-2 in the ACC. Playing at #2, #3, and #4, he went undefeated at the #4 flight.

The doubles title at #2 for Vahaly and Montgomery was the first ACC doubles title for the men since 1990. The selection of both Vahaly and Montgomery marks the third consecutive year that the Cavaliers have placed two men on the All-Conference team. The Cavaliers, ranked 53rd in the latest ITA national rankings and 16-7 overall, advanced to the ACC Finals for the first time in school history last week.

Boiko, the ACC runner-up at the #1 flight, is the first Cavalier named to the All-Conference team since 1996. She compiled a 22-14 record overall in 1998 with a 6-2 record in the conference.
