CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s tennis team defeated North Carolina 6-1 in ACC action this afternoon. The Cavaliers’ win is their first regular season win over the Tar Heels in 10 years. They improve to 14-6 overall and 5-3 in the ACC. North Carolina lost for the second match in a row and falls to 12-7 overall and 5-2 in the ACC.

The match began with doubles play at the outdoor courts at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center before being interrupted by rain. The Cavaliers captured two of three matches to claim the doubles point. The freshman tandem of Brian Vahaly and 1997 Chapel Hill High School graduate $ Huntley Montgomery completed an undefeated conference season with a 9-7 triumph over Rob Tedesco and Tony Thomas at #1. The Cavalier duo had played all season at #2, but moved up to #1 for this match. They are 24-9 overall this season.

The teams played into the first set before the rains hit that delayed play for nearly an hour and forced the teams to move the match to the indoor courts at the Boars Head Sports Club.

Hyon Yoo was first off for Virginia following a 6-3, 6-2 win over Gregg Hill. He was followed a short time later by Vahaly, who dispatched Tripp Phillips in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 at #1.

North Carolina got its only win as Adam Seri downed Bear Schofield 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 at #3.

Freshman Tommy Croker clinched the win for Virginia with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Michael Grass. Montgomery :and John Winter won at #2 and #5, respectively, to close out the scoring.
