Michael Malone Joins Bobby Gonzalez at Manhattan College

CHARLOTTESVILLE. Va. – Michael Malone, the Director of Men’s Basketball Administration at the University of Virginia for the past year, has accepted a position as assistant men’s basketball coach at Manhattan College. Malone joins former Virginia men’s basketball assistant coach Bobby Gonzalez at Manhattan. Gonzalez was named Manhattan’s men’s head basketball coach on March 12.

Prior to joining Virginia’s basketball staff in 1998, Malone spent three years at Providence College. He served as an administrative assistant at Providence during the 1995-96 season and was an assistant coach from 1996-98.

During his two seasons as an assistant coach at Providence, the Friars compiled a 37-28 record. Providence advanced to the 1997 NCAA Southeast Regional finals before losing to eventual national champion Arizona. Malone worked extensively with the guards and shared responsibility for scouting opponents.

Prior to his tenure at Providence, Malone served as an assistant coach at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich., during the 1994-95 season. He helped lead Oakland to a 21-8 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Malone, a native of Astoria, N.Y., began his coaching career at Friends Academy in Baltimore, Md., where he was an assistant coach for one year.

He earned honorable mention McDonald’s All-America honors while playing high school basketball at Seton Hall Prep in West Orange, N.J. Malone later attended prep school for one year and captained the basketball team at Worcester Academy in Worcester, Mass. He played college basketball at Loyola College in Baltimore, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in history in May of 1994.

Malone’s father, Brendan – formerly head coach of the Toronto Raptors – is an assistant coach with the New York Knicks and is in his 13th season of coaching in the NBA.
