CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of North Carolina is in first place by four strokes over the University of Maryland after the first 36 holes of play in the Keswick Club Cavalier Classic on Saturday (Sept. 19). North Carolina has a team score of 17-under-par 551 and Maryland is at 13-under-par 555.

Northwestern is third in the team competition at five-under-par 563, while North Florida is fourth (566) and North Carolina State is fifth (567).

Brad Hyler of North Carolina is first in the individual competition with a 10-under-par total of 132 after rounds of 65 and 67 on the par 71 Keswick Golf Club course. Don Hill of North Carolina is one stroke back in second place after rounds of 66 and 67 for a nine-under-par total of 133. Mark Gauley of North Carolina State and Miguel Riviera of Maryland are tied for third at six under par 136. Gauley had rounds of 69 and 67, while Riviera had rounds of 68 and 68.

Virginia is in 13th place with a team score of 596.

Shivin Kwatra of the Virginia “B” team is in seventh place in the individual competition with a four-under-par total of 138. He had rounds of 70 and 68 on Saturday.

James Driscoll is the top player for the Cavaliers’ “A” team with rounds of 71 and 73 for a two-over-par total of 144. Other players on the Virginia “A” team included Steve Marino (76-71 147), Cameron Yancey (74-77 151), Jimmy Forehand (75-79 154) and Mike Mitchell (77-80 157).

Other scores for the Virginia “B” team included Andrea Brotto (77-76 153), Eric Dandridge (80-74 154), George Pickral (78-77 155) and Shep Stevens (76-81 157). Virginia’s “B” team is not included in the team standings.

The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Sunday.
