Orange Defeats Blue, 26-9, in Wrestling Intrasquad Match

Charlottesville, Va.-The University of Virginia wrestling team opened its 1998-99 season tonight with its annual Blue-Orange exhibition match held at Memorial Gymnasium. The Orange Squad, led by senior captain Jim Harshaw‘s (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) major decision at 165, defeated the Blue Squad 26-9.
After an opening forfeit at 157, Harshaw won the opening match of the evening with a 14-0 decision over frosh Mark McLean (Plainfield, N.J./Blair Academy). John Qualter (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) then won for the Blue Squad with a 7-3 defeat of Robbie Moutoux (Vienna, Va./George C. Marshall) at 174. But the Orange squad ripped off three consecutive victories with two at 184 and once at heavyweight to take a commanding 19-3 lead. Matt Roth (Wescosville, Pa./Parkland) stopped the Orange run at 125 with a 6-0 defeat of Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall).
Steve Garland (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) put the Orange squad back in the win column with an exciting overtime by criteria decision over Mike Pacillo (Kenmore, N.Y./Kenmore West). Then Jon Frent (Wayside, N.J./Ocean Township) defeated Jeremy Kirk (Flemington, N.J./Blair Academy) at 141 and in the evening’s final match, John Pozniak (State College, Pa./State College) took a major decision of 8-0 over John Christopher (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) to help the Orange to the final score of 29-6.
The Cavaliers begin their season with a trip to VMI to compete in the Keydet Invitational on Saturday, November 15.
