CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. —Alexis Sherard, an assistant men’s basketball coach at Binghamton University in Binghamton, N.Y., for the last year, has been named Director of Men’s Basketball Administration at the University of Virginia.

Before assuming assistant coaching responsibilities at Binghamton, Sherard worked with Virginia men’s head basketball coach Pete Gillen as the administrative assistant in the men’s basketball office at Providence College for two years (1996-98).

“Alexis is a terrific young man who did a fine job for us at Providence in a similar position,” Gillen said. “I think he learned a lot this past year with Jim Norris at Binghamton University. Alexis has a lot to offer and he’ll relate well to our players. He’s a great addition to our program.”

Prior to his tenure at Providence College, Sherard was the men’s head basketball coach and Dean of Admissions at Lakewood Prep in Lakewood, N.J., for one year (1995-96). He was an assistant basketball coach and admissions counselor at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vt., for two years (1993-95).

Sherard received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics and education from Saint Michael’s College in 1993, and his master’s degree in guidance from Providence College in 1998.

He played four years of basketball at Saint Michael’s and was the team’s captain as a senior. He was selected to the Northeast 10 Conference All-Defensive Team as a junior and a senior.

Sherard, who is from Lakewood, N.J., graduated from Lakewood Prep. He is the school’s all-time leading scorer in basketball and was a McDonald’s All-American nominee.
