TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Virginia softball team opened play in the 1998 ACC Tournament on Friday by defeating Georgia Tech 3-1, followed by an upset of the number-one seed North Carolina by a score of 2-1. UVa then advanced to face a determined Florida State team on Saturday, which handed the Cavaliers a 10-0 loss at Lady Seminole Field.

UVa had swept the regular-season doubleheader with the Seminoles (April 18) by the scores of 4-1 and 3-0. However, the third time would not be a charm for the Cavaliers, as FSU built an early lead which led to the game being called after five innings of play.

Virginia used a trio of pitchers to try and slow down the Florida State offense. Stacey Zagol, who pitched brilliantly in the tournament against Georgia Tech and North Carolina, found things a little more difficult against Florida State. She pitched two and two-third innings, scattering three hits and recording two strikeouts. Chrisy Quinn made her tournament debut, allowing five hits and posting one strikeout in one and two-third innings. Cory Bolkan pitched two-thirds of an inning, surrendering one hit.

At the plate, the Cavaliers managed to gather three hits. Jen Krill (1-2), Tish Tablan (1-3) and Meaghan Young (1-3) gathered hits for UVa in the 10-0 loss.

The Cavaliers will now face the winner of the North Carolina vs. Maryland/Georgia Tech game on Saturday, (April 25). The game is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. and will be played at Lady Seminole Field.
