TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Virginia softball team completed play in the 1999 Tallahassee Democrat FSU Invitational softball tournament by competing in the finals of the silver bracket championship game. The Cavaliers advanced to the finals by posting a 4-1 record over opponents, including three shutout wins over their first five foes in the tournament. UVa blanked Miami-Ohio by the score of 6-0, topped Mississippi 1-0 and defeated Robert Morris 3-0 in early games of the tournament.

Virginia won a 3-2 decision over Kansas to advance to the silver bracket finals. UVa took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and held that lead until the Jayhawks scored two runs in the fifth inning. Trailing 2-1, the Cavaliers scored a run in the sixth inning to send the game into extra innings. After holding Kansas from scoring a run in the top of the eighth inning, Virginia scored a run of its own to earn a 3-2 victory. Chrissy Quinn was the Cavaliers winning pitcher, as she limited the Jayhawks to just two runs on three hits. Virginia collected three runs on six hits. The win propelled UVa into the championship game of the silver bracket finals to face Florida Atlantic.

FAU jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, and the Cavaliers were never fully able to recover. Virginia narrowed Florida Atlantics lead to 4-2, before FAU scored four unanswered runs en route to a 8-2 victory.

With the split, UVa’s record moves to 12-11 overall. The Cavaliers finished play in the tournament with a record of 4-2. Virginia will return to action on Monday, March 15 when the Cavaliers take on the Iowa State Cyclones in Tallahassee, Fla. The contest between ISU and UVa is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. and will be played at Florida State’s Lady Seminole Field.
