Softball Drops Two to South Carolina

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia softball team dropped a pair of games to South Carolina in a doubleheader at The Park. The Gamecocks won the first game 4-2, before rallying in the second game to take the nightcap 8-6.
In game-one, Stacey Zagol took the mound for Virginia and scattered seven hits while striking out two batters. Sky Brown pitched for South Carolina, and gave up 10 hits in her outing. USC jumped out to a three run lead before Kim Pietro (1-4, 1 RBI) hit a solo homerun to extend the South Carolina lead to 4-0 in the sixth inning. Virginia answered USC’s scoring in the sixth inning when Jen Krill (1-1, 2 RBI) hit a single, which scored Lori Reese (1-3) and Corinne Good (2-3). Meaghan Young (2-4), Tish Tablan (2-4) and Kelly McCabe (1-3) each added hits for Virginia. However, UVa was unable to score again, dropping the game 4-2.
Chrisy Quinn was the starting pitcher for Virginia in the second game. She pitched just over three innings after striking out four batters and allowing three runs. She was replaced by Zagol, before Cory Bolkan closed out the game on the mound for UVA. The Cavaliers shot out to an early 6-1 lead after three innings. Virginia gathered 11 hits in the game, highlighted by Young (2-5, 2 runs 1 RBI), Tablan (1-4, 2 RBI), Stacy Holmes (2-4, 1 RBI, run), and Karen Breshears (2-4). Trailing by five runs, South Carolina mounted a comeback scoring four runs in the fourth inning, and the game-tying run in the top of the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings. Tied at 6-6, the Gamecocks scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to seal the victory. Amy Peay (1-3, run), Mariruth Graham (1-4, run), Kelly McCabe (1-3), and Good (1-4, 1 RBI) added hits in the loss.
The sweep drops Virginia’s record to (30-21) overall, while the wins improve South Carolina’s record to (24-14) overall. The Cavaliers will return to action on Friday, (April 10) when Virginia travels to Charlotte, N.C. to face UNC-Charlotte in a doubleheader. Game-one is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
