TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Virginia softball team competed in the second day of the 1999 Tallahassee Democrat FSU Invitational softball tournament, which is being hosted by Florida State University. UVa faced the defending 1998 National Champion Fresno State Bulldogs at Lady Seminole Field. Fresno State entered the contest with Virginia ranked #3 in the country.

The Bulldogs jumped on the scoreboard first after scoring a run in the second inning. Fresno State would hold on to the 1-0 lead until the seventh inning, when Virginia scored its first run of the contest to knot the score at 1-1, sending the game into extra innings. However, FSU scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to seal a 4-1 victory over the Cavaliers.

Virginia was limited to only two hits on the afternoon, but managed to score one run and had only one error. Fresno State scored four runs on eight hits and committed five errors in the game.

With the loss, UVa’s record falls to 10-10 overall. Virginia advances to the bracket-play portion of the tournament on Sunday, March 14 against an opponent yet to be determined. Following the tournament, Virginia will return to action on Monday, March 15 when the Cavaliers take on the Iowa State Cyclones in Tallahassee, Fla. The contest between ISU and UVa is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. and will be played at Florida State’s Lady Seminole Field.
