RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of Virginia softball team began the bracket-play portion of the UNC Triangular Classic Tournament schedule at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex. The Cavaliers entered the bracket-play round with a 3-1 record in the tournament after posting wins over Akron (12-2), UNC-Wilmington (6-5) and Campbell (4-3) before falling to #22 Minnesota by a score of 1-0 in the eighth inning.

UVa’s opened play on the third day of the tournament by facing UNC-Greensboro Spartans. Virginia had little trouble with the Spartans and earned its fourth victory of the season by winning the game by the score of 9-1. The Cavaliers then advanced to play their second ranked opponent of the tournament. This time around it was the #24 Illinois-Chicago Flames. UVa was unable to get on track against UIC, and eventually fell to the Flames 14-2.

Virginia’s record stands at 4-2 on the season. All six games were played in the UNC Triangular Classic Tournament. Both of the Cavaliers losses have been to ranked opponents. UVa will return to action on Thursday, Feb 25th when the Cavaliers travel to Santa Barbara, Calif. to face the University of California at Santa Barbara Gauchos. Following that contest, UVa will begin play in the 1999 UCSB Easton Invitational Tournament which is scheduled for Feb. 26-28. The tournament will be hosted by UCSB and will be played at the Campus Diamond. Virginia is scheduled to play Texas A&M (9:00 a.m.) and UC-Santa Barbara (11:00 a.m.) on Feb. 26th, Cal Poly-Slo (9:00 a.m.) and UC-Santa Barbara (11:00 a.m.) on Feb. 27th and Cal Poly-Slo (9:00 a.m.) and Texas A&M (11:00 a.m.) on Feb. 28th.
