RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of Virginia softball team opened its 1999 season by participating in day one of the UNC Triangular Classic Softball Tournament at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex. The Cavaliers played the Akron Zips in the season opener for both teams.

Virginia did not waste any time putting runs on the scoreboard against Akron, as the Cavaliers scored seven runs in the first inning en route to a 12-2 victory. Stacey Zagol claimed her first win of the season as she pitched five innings for Virginia. Zagol yielded five hits and two earned runs while recording four strikeouts.

Kristen Dennis made her UVa debut in stellar fashion, as she went 3-3 at the plate and recorded Virginia’s first homerun of the season. Dennis also scoring three runs and added two singles. Kelly McCabe (1-3) posted a game-high four RBI, do in part to her bases loaded first inning triple. McCabe also scored a run. Meagan Young picked right up where she left off from last season as she finished 2-3 in the game. Young collected two RBI and scored one run. Karen Breshears (one RBI, one run) and Mariruth Graham (two runs, one RBI) each finished 1-2 at the plate, while Jen Krill went 1-3, scored two runs and collected an RBI. Lori Reese (1-4) hit a double, scored a run and gathered an RBI, and Corinne Good (one run) and Amy Peay (one RBI) contributed in the 12-2 victory.

UVa’s second game on the afternoon against Minnesota was postponed due to rain. The contest has been rescheduled and will be played at either 5:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20. The Golden Gophers defeated Campbell 7-5 in their first game of the tournament.

With the win, Virginia’s record stands at 1-0 on the season, while Akron falls to 0-1. UVa will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 20 when the Cavaliers compete in the second day of the UNC Triangular Classic Softball Tournament. Virginia will play UNC-Wilmington at 11:00 a.m. and will then face Campbell at 3:00 p.m. before taking on Minnesota. UVa is 12-0 against UNC-Wilmington and 7-1 against Campbell in the series meetings between the two schools. This will be the Cavaliers first ever meeting with the Golden Gophers of Minnesota.
