Softball Wins 11th Straight Game

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of Virginia softball team extended its winning streak to a season-high 11 games by sweeping Virginia Tech in a doubleheader at the Tech Softball Field. The Cavaliers won the first game 5-1, before taking the nightcap by the score of 6-2. The sweep marks Virginia’s 21st win in its last 26 games (81%).

Coming off her ACC Pitcher of the Week award, Stacey Zagol pitched game-one and recorded five strikeouts while allowing only three hits. Virginia gathered eight hits at the plate, led by Corinne Good (2-2, 2 runs, 1 RBI, triple) and Stacy Homes (2-4, 1 RBI, run). Mariruth Graham (1-2, run), Beth Crimi (1-4, 1 RBI), Meaghan Young (1-3, 1 RBI, run) and Karen Breshears (1-4) added hits in the 5-2 victory.

Chrisy Quinn (1-3, run) started on the mound for the Cavaliers in the second game, striking out seven batters while scattering five hits. On offense, Virginia gathered seven hits, but none were bigger than Jen Krill’s. With the game tied at 2-2 in the sixth inning, she hit a grand slam to put Virginia ahead for good 6-2. Krill finished (1-1, 4 RBI, run) in the game and recorded UVa’s first grand slam of the season. Crimi (2-3), Lori Reese (1-3, run), Good (1-4, run) and Young (1-3) contributed in the 6-2 win.

The victories improve Virginia’s record to (30-17) overall. The Cavaliers will home to face North Carolina on Friday (April 3) and Saturday, (April 4). Friday’s game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m., and Saturday’s doubleheader will begin at 1:00 p.m. All three games will be played at The Park.
