COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior attackmen Matt Cutia (Homer N.Y.) scored three goals and sophomore goalie Rob Mulligan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) recorded 16 saves to lead No. 8 seed Syracuse (12-4) to a 13-9 victory over No. 5 seed Georgetown (13-3) in the NCAA men’s lacrosse semifinals at Byrd Stadium. Syracuse, which advances to the NCAA Championship game for the 10th time in school history, becomes the first No. 8 seed to advance to the championship game.

Cutia scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 2:48 elapsed in the third quarter. He received a pass from junior midfielder Matt Caione (Yorktown, N.Y.) and beat Hoya goalie Brian Hole (Manlius, N.Y.). The goal gave the Orangemen a 6-5 lead. Cutia’s goal allowed Syracuse to recover from as much as a 4-1 deficit. The goal also broke the third and final tie of the day. Cutia scored Syracuse’s 12th and 13th goals of the day. He has scored a team-leading 43 goals this season.

Mulligan led the Orange defensive effort which held the Hoyas six goals under their season average of 15.1 goals per game. It marked only the second time this season that Georgetown was held below 10 goals in a game. Syracuse held Georgetown scoreless for a 27:17 stretch during the second, third and fourth quarters. The Hoyas were held scoreless in the third quarter.

For Syracuse, junior midfielder Jeff Lowe (Liverpool, N.Y.), senior midfielder Jeff Cordisco (Woodbine, Md.) and junior midfielder Tim Byrnes (Baldwin, N.Y.) scored two goals each for Syracuse. Senior attackman Scott Urick (Fairfax, Va.) scored a team-high three goals while junior attackmen Andy Flick (Wilton, Conn.) scored two goals and added one assist.

Syracuse advances to the NCAA Final on Monday at 10:55 a.m., at Byrd Stadium vs. the Johns Hopkins-Virginia winner. The game will be televised live on ESPN.
