Tennis Players Crowned ACC Champions

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The University of Virginia men’s tennis team had two singles players and one doubles team named Atlantic Coast Conference champions this spring. The UVa women’s tennis team had one doubles team recognized as ACC champions.

The two singles champions for the men’s team marks the first time in school history the Cavaliers had more than one champion in the same season. Junior Hyon Yoo, a native of Rockville, Md., is the league champion at 4 this season. He fashioned a 7-1 ACC record, including 5-1 at 4 and 2-0 at 3. Yoo leads the team with a 28-9 record and has won his last 11 matches.

Joining Yoo is sophomore John Winter. Winter, a Richmond, Va., native, claimed the crown at 5. He posted a 5-3 league mark, including 4-2 at 5 and 1-1 at 4, this spring. A rangy serve and volley plaayer, he won his first 11 dual matches this spring. He is 17-3 this spring and 22-10 overall. His father, John, Jr., lettered in tennis at UVa in 1969-70.

Virginias highly touted doubles tandem of Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga.) took the title at 3 doubles. The freshman duo completed an undefeated conference season, going 7-0 at 2 and 1-0 at 1. They are the first doubles team to go undefeated in all league matches since North Carolinas Roland Thornqvist and Darryl Wyatt went 8-0 at 1 in 1992. Vahaly and Montgomery are 24-10 this season. They are Virginias f8irst ACC doubles champion since David Kanstoroom and Laurent Pruvost were champs at 2 in 1990.

The women’s team also featured a pair of freshmen as ACC champs. Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach, Fla.) and Christie Schweer (Houston, Texas) have been outstanding all spring in claiming the title at 3 doubles. They are ranked 33rd in the current rankings after compiling a 7-1 ACC mark. They are 26-4 overall this season.

The womens team features three singles players who finished as ACC runners-up this seasonPaige Boiko at 1, Stacy Gingold at 2 and Schweer at 5.
