Chris Sanderson was back in net for UVa and he is the probable starter for the Maryland game. The three-goal margin to JHU was the biggest since the 22-13 loss to JHU in 1995 at Homewood. UVa is now 24-4 at Klockner Stadium. Dom Starsia is 36-6 at home, at UVa.

Maryland and UVa have alternated the last four years, losing in the NCAA final game. UVa lost in overtime in 1996 and1994 to Princeton, while the Terps have lost in 1995 and 1997, by wide margins to Syracuse and Princeton.

UVa has been subjected to an unusual early-season rash of injuries. Starters Drew McKnight(A), Chris Sanderson(G), Hanley Holcomb(M), Henry Oakey(M), David Wren(M), and Ryan Curtis(D) have had to sit down for injury or sick time, and reserve David Bruce(expected to be the fourth arttackman) was most severely injured. He may have to miss the whole season. McKnight, Curtis, and Oakey played vs.Princeton.

This is year One of the post-Doug Knight, Michael Watson, Tim Whiteley era. Knight(1997 grad, 165+84=249), Watson(1997 grad, 142+98=240), and Whiteley(1996 grad, 85+144=244) leave behind a huge void. UVa is, however, averaging about five fewer goals per game, as compared to last year; although, defensively, the goalsagainst average is down about a half goal a game.

Top returning players are David Wren(4th, M, 2nd AA, All ACC, 26+6=32); Drew Melchionni(4th, M, HM AA in 1996 and 1997, 12+7=19); Drew McKnight(2nd, A, 22+20=42); Jay Jalbert(2nd, M-A, 19+4=23; Tucker Radebaugh(3rd, A-M, HM AA, 24+11=35); Jason Hard(2nd, M, ACC Rookie, 5+0=5, 176 of 285 faceoffs); and Chris Sanderson(4th, G, Canadian World Games Team, 146 saves, 118 goals allowed).

New starters for 1998 are Jalbert, and Radebaugh on attack; midfielders Wren, Henry Oakey(back from 1996), and Michael Leahy , Ryan Curtis(2nd, D, Potomac, MD), and John Harvey(1st, D, St. George’s School)on defense.

UVa is 24-4 at Klockner Stadium, since using the facility first in 1993.
