BALTIMORE – The first round of qualifying at the 1998 T. Rowe Price National Clay Court Championships at the Suburban Club in Baltimore, Md., was not a successful one for members of the University of Virginia men’s and women’s tennis teams.

Sophomore Huntley Montgomery, the second-leading winner on the men’s tennis squad last season with 27 victories, fell to Peter Handoyo of Tennessee 6-0, 6-4 in this morning’s opening round.

The men’s doubles team of Hyon Yoo and Grant DeFehr fell 8-5 to Rudy Rodriguez and German Maldonado of the University of San Diego. Their match was delayed by rain for approximately two hours before it was completed.

Senior Paige Boiko, co-captain of the women’s squad this season, lost to Amelie Detriviere of Mississippi State 6-1, 7-5 this morning.
