Track and Field Competes in Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Virginia track and field teams competed in the 1998 Penn Relays, finishing with impressive results.
Larry Wilson highlighted the men’s performances with a second place finish in the discus throw with a toss of (56.68) meters. First-year performer Bobby Thiele finished the 10,000 meter run with a time of (29:58.29), impressively breaking the (30:00.00) mark and was a mere two seconds away from qualifying provisionally for the NCAA Championship meet. The 4×800 meter relay team of (Robert Pearce, Ray Weeden, David Kozicki and Aundre Oldacre) finished fourth (7:24.91) and the distance medley relay team of (Bill Palmer, Damond Cromer, Ray Weeden and Aundre Oldacre) placed seventh (9:41.95) in the Championships of America events. Marion Mason finished with a mark of (6.74) meters in the high jump.
Angela Lee finished third-overall (collegiate) in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of (57:99) to highlight Virginia’s women performances. Dana Thul placed tenth in the javelin throw with a toss of (39.66) meters while teammate Hillary Wilson placed 13th in the discus throw with a heave of (42.44) meters. Cheryl Twomey competed in the 5,000 meter run, finishing with a time of (17:42.95).
The Cavaliers will return to action when they compete in the Mizuno Invitational in Fairfax, Va. on Saturday, (April 9). The meet is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
