ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Virginia track and field teams finished competition in the 1998 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The men’s team finished sixth with 51 points, while the women’s team placed seventh with 54.5 points. Clemson won the men’s title with 194 points, while North Carolina won the women’s title with 187 points.

Angela Lee (57.98) highlighted the UVa women, winning the 400 meter (int) hurdles. Dana Thul finished second in the javelin throw with a distance of (41.26m). Cheryl Twomey finished third in the 10,000 meter run with a time of (37:15.21) and Kelly Miller placed fourth in the long jump with a mark of (6.01m). Miller also finished seventh in the 400 meter dash (55.63) and eigth in the triple jump with a distance of (11.61m). In the discus throw, Hillary Wilson (44.54m) placed fifth and teammate Libby Kluka (42.36m) finished sixth for UVa. Kim Turko finished fifth in the 400 meter (int) hurdles with a time of (1:02.45) and sixth in the 100 meter low hurdles with a time of (13.93). Rayna Chase took eighth place in the javelin throw with a mark of (29.72m) and Astrid Gotthardt finished eighth in the 800 meter run with a time of (2:16.97). The 4×100 meter relay team finished fifth (47.17) and the 4×400 meter relay team finished sixth (3:48.02) to round out the Virginia women’s results.

Larry Wilson won the discus throw to highlight the men’s performances with a toss that covered (55.22m), good for first place. He also finished seventh in the shot put with a throw of (14.94m). In the 800 meter run, Robert Pearce finished third (1:50.78), David Kozicki finished fifth (1:51.36) and Ray Weeden placed seventh (1:54.32). Weeden (3:48.94) and Bill Palmer (3:53.25) finished third and eighth respectively in the 1,500 meter run. Robert Thiele placed fifth in the 5,000 meter run (14:38.25), Aundre Oldacre finished sixth in the 400 meter dash (47.52), Marion Mason finished seventh in the long jump with a distance of (7.08m) and Rauhn Turner finished eight in the 400 meter (int) hurdles with a time of (52.83). The 4×100 meter relay team (41.25) and the 4×400 meter relay team (3:13.05) each placed fourth to complete UVa’s finishes for the men.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Thursday, (April 23) to compete in the Penn Relays. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m each day of the meet.
