ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Virginia track and field teams began competition in the 1998 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. After the first day of events, the womens team stands in fifth place with 27 points, while the mens team is in seventh place with 12 points. North Carolinas women lead with 82 points, while N.C. States men lead with 55 points.

Dana Thul highlighted the womens team with a second place finish in the javelin throw with a distance of (41.26m). Cheryl Twomey finished third in the 10,000 meter run with a time of (37:15.21) and Kelly Miller placed fourth in the long jump with a mark of (6.01m). In the discus throw, Hillary Wilson (44.54m) placed fifth and teammate Libby Kluka (42.36m) finished sixth for UVa. Rayna Chase took eighth place in the javelin throw with a mark of (29.72m) to round out the Virginia womens results.

Larry Wilson won the discus throw to highlight the mens performances for the Cavaliers. He had a toss that covered (55.22m), good for first place. Marion Mason finished seventh in the long jump with a distance of (7.08m) to complete UVas finishes for the men.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday, (April 18) to complete competition in the 1998 ACC Championships. The first event is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m., and competition will continue throughout the day until 8:00 p.m.
