CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia track and field teams competed in the 1998 Lou Onesty Invitational held at Lannigan Field. The women’s team finished first overall with 164 points, while the men’s team placed second in the meet with 94.5 points. Virginia Military’smen finished first with a score of 153.

The UVa women were paced by Kelly Miller, who won four events on the day. She won the long jump with a distance of (5.94m), the triple jump with a distance of (12.01m), the 200 meter dash with a time of (25.14) and the 100 meter dash in a time of (12.47). Other UVa winners were Frances Warner who won the 1,500 meter run with a time of (4:31.13), Cheryl Twomey who won the 5,000 meter run with a time of (17:37.75) and Hillary Wilson who won the discus throw with a mark of (46.68m). Kim Turko won the 100 meter high hurdles with a time of (14.48) and finished third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of (63.57). The 4×100 meter relay team captured first place with a time of (47.09). Tichanda Daniels finished second in the 100 meter high hurdles with a time of (15.05) while Erica Robinson (1.68m) took second place in the high jump. Libby Kluka finished in third place with a mark of (12.49m) in the shot put, Jennifer Wade finished third in the 100 meter dash with a time of (12.85) and Elisa Beres (10:25.88) placed third in the 3,000 meter run.

The men were led Larry Wilson, who won the discus throw with a distance of (51.14m). Marion Mason took second in the long jump with a mark of (7.15m). Robert Thiele (9:30.80) finished second and teammate James Farley (9:36.57) placed third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Bill Palmer placed second in the 1,500 meter run with a time of (3:54.13). Damond Cromer finished third in the 800 meter run with a time of (1:51.21). Rauhn Turner placed third in the 400 meter hurtles in (54.02). The 4×400 meter relay team finished second with a mark of (3:14.03) and the 4×100 meter relay team posted a third place finish with a time of (41.46).

The track and field teams will return to action on April 18-19 when Virginia travels to Orlando, Fla. to compete in the ACC Championships. Competition is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am on both days of the championships.
