CHARLOTTESVILLE — University of Virginia men’s basketball players Curtis Staples and Norman Nolan have been chosen to participate in basketball competitions during the Final Four weekend in San Antonio, Texas.

Staples, the NCAArecord-holder for three-point field goals, has been chosen to participate in the three-point shooting contest at the 10th Annual College Slam Dunk &Three-Point Shooting Championships. The competition will be held on Thursday (March 26) at the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio at 6:30 (EST). The event will be broadcast on ESPN from 9:30-11:30 PM that night with Dick Vitale and Brad Nessler hosting.

Joining Staples in th thre three-point contest are Notre Dame’s Pat Garrity, Charles Jones of Long Island University, Cincinnati’s Ruben Patterson, Nathan Smith of American and Billy Thomas from Kansas.

Nolan has been selected to compete for the East team in the 36th annual Anto National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-Star game on Friday (March 27). This event will also be held at San Antonio’s Freeman Coliseum. The all-star game is scheduled to begin at 9:00 PM (EST) and will be televised nationally on Fox Sports. The NABC all-star game is an annual contest featuring college basketball’s top senior players not competing in the Final Four.

Nolan’s teammates on the East squad include Greg Buckner of Clemson, Princeton’s Steve Goodrich, DeMarco Johnson from North Carolina-Charlotte, Felipe Lopez of St. John’s, Gannon’s Troy Nesmith, and Melvin Watson from South Carolina. North Carolina head coach Bill Guthridge is slated to coach the East team. An alternate coach will be named for Guthridge if the Tar Heels advance to the Final Four.

The West team consists of Iowa’s Ryan Bowen, Anthony Carter of Hawaii, Gonzaga’s Bakari Hendrix, Carlos Knox of IU-PU-Indianapolis, UNLV’s Tyrone Nesby, Andrae Patterson fromIndiana, Ray Tutt of UC-Santa Barbara and Ball State’s Bonzi Wells. Minnesota head coach Clem Haskins will guide the West squad.

Additional players could be added to both teams depending on the status of teams still competing in postseason tournaments.
