Vahaly Advances to Round of 16 at National Clay Court Championships

BALTIMORE – University of Virginia mens tennis player Brian Vahaly won both of his singles matches today in the main draw at the 1998 T. Rowe Price National Clay Court Championships at the Suburban Club in Baltimore, Md.
Vahaly, the 1998 Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year, defeated Gustav Pousette of Kent in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 in the first round. He then defeated Northwesterns Marc Silva 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in a tough second round match.
Vahaly faces Esteban Caril from Texas Christian Friday morning at 10:00 AM for the right to advance to the quarterfinals.
Vahaly, the eighth seed, is one of four of the top-eight seeds still playing. Four of the top eight seeds were eliminated today.
