ATHENS, Ga.–University of Virginia freshman Brian Vahaly lost to ThomasDupre of Mississippi State 6-4, 6-3 this afternoon in the first round of theindividual championships of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Tournament at the Dan MagillTennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia. The match was delayedearly in the first set due to rain.

The loss ends Vahaly’s season. He finished with a 21-10 singles record thisseason. The Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year, Vahaly is the firstCavalier in 17 years to earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament’s individualchampionships.

Dupre, a senior from Normandy, France, is the tournament’s fifth seed. He iscurrently ranked eighth nationally in the collegiate singles rankings. He advancesto play Georgia’s Steven Baldas in the second round.
