Vahaly Triumphs in First Round of NCAA Championships

ATHENS, Ga. – Virginia’s Brian Vahaly tied the school record for most wins ina season today with a 6-1, 6-2 straight set win over Oklahoma State’s RobHowarth in the first round of the individual singles at the NCAAChampionships at the University of Georgia. The win is the 29th of theseason for Vahaly, who tied Justin Smith’s mark set in 1994-95. Vahaly hasa 29-8 record this season.
Vahaly, from Atlanta, is the first Cavalier to post a win in the NCAAChampionships since 1981 when Geoff Macdonald advanced to the round of 32.
He will face Peter Handoyo of Tennessee on Thursday. Handoyo defeatedRice’s Efe Ustundag in the first round 7-6(9), 6-4.
Vahaly will also team with sophomore Huntley Montgomery in the doubleschampionships. They are currently ranked ninth in the country and have a15-9 record. They are scheduled to face UCLA’s Jason Cook and BrandonKramer. The UCLA squad is ranked seventh nationally with a 29-11 record.
Singles and doubles play begins Thursday morning at 9 a.m.
