CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Senior third baseman Brian Sherlock (Medford, N.J.) went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and three runs batted in, but it was not enough as the University of Virginia baseball team dropped a close 7-6 game to Old Dominion. With the loss, the Cavaliers had their 14-game home winning streak snapped. Virginia falls to 15-9 on the season, while Old Dominion improves to 14-12.

The Monarchs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, thanks to a two-run double by Jason Greiner. The Cavaliers came back to tie up the score with two runs in the bottom of the third, as senior outfielder Jon Kemmerer (Reston, Va.) hit an RBI single and Sherlock had an RBI double. Old Dominion took a 3-2 lead on an RBI single by Ian Rauls in the top of the fourth, but Virginia once again tied up the game in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by senior outfielder Ted Kinsman (Vienna, Va.).

Old Dominion took the lead for good with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Tim Hummel hit an RBI triple to break the tie, then came in to score on an RBI single by Anthony Forelli. The Monarchs final run of the inning came when Forelli crossed the plate on an error. Old Dominion added another run in the top of the eighth inning, as Shawn Pearson doubled and eventually came in to score on a passed ball.

The Cavaliers attempted to come back in the final two innings, but saw their efforts come up just short. Virginia scored one run in the bottom of the eighth as sophomore catcher Josh Bowling (Springfield, Va.) doubled and eventually scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore shortstop Tim LaVigne (Virginia Beach, Va.). The Cavaliers would add two more runs in the ninth as Kinsman reached on an error and Sherlock hit a two-run homer, his sixth of the season, to left center.

Andy Lee picked up the win for Old Dominion, allowing two runs on three hits in 4-1/3 innings of relief. Sophomore Kevin Shrout (Murrysville, Pa.) took the loss for the Cavaliers, surrendering five earned runs in 6-1/3 innings while striking out eight.

The Cavaliers return to the diamond on Friday, Mar. 27, when they play host to North Carolina in the opener of a three-game series at 3:00 p.m.
