FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Virginia track and field teams competed in the 1998 Adidas Invitational (Fairfax, Va.), finishing with impressive results.

Angela Lee led the way for the women’s team with her first place finish in the 400 meter hurdles. Lee won the event with a time of (58.48). Nicole Kimbrough finished second in the long jump with a mark of (6.03) meters and placed fourth in the 100 meter dash with a time of (12.18). Astrid Gotthardt finished fifth in the 1,500 meter run with a time of (4:31.10), which qualifies her for the ECAC Championship meet on (May 24-26) in Fairfax, Va. Hillary Wilson and Libby Kluka finished second and third respectively in the discus throw. Wilson captured second place with a toss of (41.39) meters, while Kluka took third place with a heave of (39.47) meters. Kelly Miller finished third in the long jump with a distance of (5.82) meters. Dana Thul finished fourth in the javelin with a toss of (41.43) meters, and the 4×400 meter relay team finished fourth with a time of (4:00.84) to highlight the women’s finishes.

Larry Wilson and Chris Farley paced the men’s team. Wilson took first place in the discus throw with a mark of (51.42) meters, while Farley captured first place in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of (9:25.94). Damond Cromer and Rob Pearce both turned in solid performances as well. Cromer finished right behind Farley in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of (9:27.92), good for second place, while Pearce finished second in the 1,500 meter run with a time of (3:46.30). Marion Mason finished third in the long jump with a mark of (7.18) meters to highlight the men’s finishes.

Cheryl Twomey, who competed in the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C., finished third in the 5,000 meter run with a time of (17:21.41), which qualifies her for the ECAC championship meet. The mark was Twomey’s personal best for the event.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday, (May 16) to compete in the JMU Invitational held in Harrisonburg, Va. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
