CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team opened play in the 1998 Jefferson Cup Invitational by posting a 3-0 win over Virginia Commonwealth at Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers defeated the Rams (15-5, 15-8, 18-16). Virginia took the court in the nightcap and handed Cornell a 3-0 loss (15-2, 15-4, 15-4).

In the VCU match, Mary Frances Scott recorded 25 assists and seven digs. Teammates Jessica Parsons posted 19 kills, six blocks and two digs and Deanna Zwarich gathered 10 kills, four digs and three blocks. Virginia received solid contributions from Katie Jones and Andrea Fischer. Jones recorded 16 digs and seven kills while Fischer posted seven kills and seven digs. First-year setter Deidre Downs collected 19 assists and seven digs in the 3-0 victory.

In the Cornell match, the Cavaliers didn’t waste anytime in defeating the Big Red. Scott recorded all of Virginia’s 32 assists to go along with five digs. Parson recorded 10 kills, four digs and three blocks. The trio of Jones (9 kills, 8 digs, 2 blocks), Zwarich (9 kills, 3 digs, 1 block) and Fischer (8 digs, 5 kills and 2 blocks) paved the way for UVa in the runaway win. Amanda Wells (7 digs, 1 kill) and Winters (7 digs, 4 kills) aided in the 3-0 win.

With the two victories, Virginia’s record improves to 10-1 overall and ties the mark set by the 1996 team for the best start to a season in the history of Virginia volleyball. The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday, (Sept. 19) when UVa faces Georgetown at 6:00 p.m. in the final match of the tournament. Prior to the Cavaliers/Hoyas match, Georgetown plays VCU at 1:00 p.m. and VCU faces Cornell at 3:00 p.m.
