ATLANTA — The University of Virginia men’s tennis team lost to Duke 4-2 in the finals of the Atlantic Coast Conference men’s tennis tournament this afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center on the Georgia Tech campus. Duke’s title is its fifth championship in the last six years.

The Cavaliers, appearing in their first ACC Tournament finals, are now 16-7 overall, while 15th-ranked Duke improves to 20-5.

Virginia gained the first point by winning two doubles matches to open play. The freshman tandem of Huntley Montgomery and Brian Vahaly upset the Blue Devils’ 11th-ranked duo of Doug Root and Jordan Wile 9-8(3) at 1. The win improved their record this season to 26-10.

Duke rebounded in singles by winning four of the five matches played. The Blue Devils clinched the title as 73 Alberto Brause defeated Montgomery 6-1, 7-5 at 2.

Vahaly, playing in his hometown, downed Root at 1 for Virginia’s lone singles win. In the regular season meeting between the two, Root handed Vahaly a 6-2, 7-6 loss. But Vahaly got the better of his 17th-ranked opponent today with a 6-0, 6-4 straight-set win.
