Virginia Men's Lacrosse Falls to Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The second-ranked Maryland Terrapins defeated No. 5 Virginia, 14-9, to clinch their first outright regular season ACC title since 1989. Maryland improved to 7-0, its best start since the 1987 season.

Maryland scored four unanswered goals in 3:17 seconds en route to outscoring Virginia 6-2 in the third quarter. Maryland’s two-time All-America senior attackman Matt Hahn scored four goals, including three in the Terps’ third quarter run, to lead the Terps.

Hahn’s hat trick was the 21st of his career and extended his consecutive point-scoring streak to 52 games. His four goals on the afternoon upped his career total to 117 and placed him in a tie for fourth place on the school’s all-time list with Jim Wilkerson.

The Terps received career days at the face-off position and in the cage. Maryland face-off specialist Brian Haggerty posted a career-high tying 19 face-off wins, including nine consecutive draws between the second and third quarters. Terp sophomore goalie Kevin Healy registered a career-best 24 saves, including seven in the opening quarter and nine in the final quarter.

The Terps lead 6-4 at the half before opening things up in the third quarter. Hahn scored his first of the afternoon on an extra-man opportunity just 18 seconds into the quarter. Hahn would complete the hat trick at the 11:25 mark of the third to put the Terps ahead 10-4.

Virginia’s Drew McKnight led the Cavs in scoring by posting three assists. The Cavaliers were the first team to outscore Maryland in a quarter this season, netted four goals to Maryland’s three in the fourth quarter.

Maryland improved to 7-0 (2-0 ACC), while the Cavaliers fell to 3-3 (0-1 ACC). Maryland hosts No. 12 Navy for its final regular home game of the 1998 season. Face-off is set for 1:00 in Byrd Stadium.
