CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team started the 1998 season with a 3-0 victory over William and Mary at Memorial Gymnasium in front of 152 spectators. The match was the season opener for both teams. The Cavaliers swept the Tribe in three straight games 15-10, 15-13, 15-6.

Virginia’s offense was paced by the setting of Mary Frances Scott, who finished with a game-high 43 assists to go along with 14 digs. The Cavaliers balanced scoring attack was led by Katie Jones (13 digs, 10 kills), Jessica Parsons (game-high 16 digs, 10 kills) and Deanna Zwarich (12 kills, 10 digs). Whitney Bilger and Andrea Fischer added a punch to the Virginia offense. Bilger gathered a game-high 14 kills and five digs, while Fischer added eight kills and five digs in the win.

William and Mary was led by Sarah Gubler’s 43 assists, eight digs and four kills. Teammate Melissa Owen posted 12 kills and 10 digs for the Tribe in the loss.

With the victory, Virginia’s record moves to 1-0 overall, while the loss drops William and Mary’s record to 0-1. The Cavaliers will return to action on Friday, (Sept 4) when Virginia begins competition in the Navy Trident Classic Tournament in Annapolis, Md. UVa will open play against Buffalo (4:00 p.m.) before facing Minnesota (7:30 p.m.).
