ANNAPOLIS. Md. – The University of Virginia volleyball team won three of its four matches in the 1998 Navy Trident Classic Tournament held in Macdonough Hall.

UVa opened the tournament with a 3-0 win against Buffalo (15-5, 15-6 and 15-8), before falling in five games to Minnesota (15-5, 4-15, 15-10, 12-15 and 15-17). The loss to the Gophers would be the Cavaliers only setback, as Virginia rebounded in the second day of the tournament by defeating Navy (15-8, 15-4 and 15-12), then finishing tournament play in winning fashion with a 3-0 win over Loyola (15-6, 15-4 and 15-8).

In UVa’s opening match against Buffalo, Mary Frances Scott dished out 34 of her 172 assists in the tournament to pace the UVa offense. Deanna Zwarich posted a team-high eight kills, while the duo of Jenny Harmon (eight digs, five kills) and Amanda Wells (eight digs) came up big for the Cavaliers in the 3-0 win. In Virginia’s second match against Minnesota, Scott posted 51 of Virginia’s 52 assists, with Whitney Bilger (14 kills, 10 digs), Andrea Fischer (13 kills, four digs) and Jessica Parsons (12 digs, three digs) leading the way for the Cavaliers. Wells added a team-high 10 digs, however, Virginia fell short in the 3-2 loss.

On day-two of the tournament against Navy, Scott chalked-up 44 assists, six digs and four kills, while Katie Jones posted game-highs with her 16 kills and 10 digs to pace UVa to a 3-0 victory. In Virginia’s final match against Loyola, first-year player Deidre Downs gathered a team-high 21 assists to control the offense. Fischer recorded a team-high 10 assists, while teammates Jones (nine digs, five kills), Parsons (seven kills) and Zwarich (five kills, four digs) assisted in the 3-0 win.

Virginia’s record improves to 4-1 overall with the completion of the tournament. The Cavaliers will travel to Blacksburg, Va. to face Virginia Tech on Tuesday, (Sept. 8). The match is schedule to begin at 7:00 p.m.
