CHARLOTTESVILLE – Va. – The University of Virginia won the 20th annual Virginia Sports Information Director’s Association (VaSID) state survey of Division I intercollegiate athletic programs. Virginia had a winning percentage of .621 (258-156-6) in it’s Division I intercollegiate athletic contests in 1997-98.

The survey began in 1978-79 and includes only those sports with NCAA sponsored championships. This is Virginia’s seventh overall title and the Cavaliers’ second in a row. UVa won five championships in a row between 1988-89 and 1992-93.

The Cavaliers finished fifth among the 13 Division I programs in men’s winning percentage at .589 (107-74-4) and third among the 12 Division I programs in women’s winning percentage at .647 (151-82-2).

Virginia had teams and individuals representing 16 sports participate in postseason competition during the 1997-98 academic year. Both the men’s soccer and women’s lacrosse teams reached the NCAA Championship game. The rowing squad captured a regional title and placed third at the NCAA championships. The field hockey team was defeated in the NCAA semifinals and the men’s lacrosse team lost in the NCAA quarterfinals.

Virginia Commonwealth University won the men’s competition with a winning percentage of .669 (93-45-4). Old Dominion University won the women’s competition with a winning percentage of .671 (86-42-1). Hampton University finished second in the overall competition with a winning percentage of .612 (120-76).
