Volleyball Defeats Maryland

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team battled a determined Maryland squad in front of 102 spectators at Memorial Gym. The Cavaliers rolled to a 15-6 win in the first game before Maryland buckled down in the second and third games. Virginia pulled out to leads in both the second and third games, and Maryland fought right back in both contest. The Cavaliers were able to hold off the Terrapins, as they captured both games by the scores of 15-12 and 15-12.

Virginia was paced by setter Mary Frances Scott, who recorded a match-high 44 assists to go along with eight digs, four kills, three service aces and two blocks. Jessica Parsons posted a team-high 16 kills for the Cavaliers in the 3-0 win. The trio of Claire Folga (15 digs, 11 kills, 2 blocks), Andrea Fischer (10 kills, 10 digs) and Katie Jones (10 kills, 8 digs) came up huge for UVa. Tamara Shulman recorded five kills, three digs and two blocks while teammates Kristi Winters and Amanda Wells added nine and seven digs, respectively.

Maryland was led by Jaime Summers who gathered match-highs with 19 kills and 17 digs. Setter Libby Alberts dished out 39 assists in the loss.

With the win, Virginia improves to 16-3 overall, 5-2 in the ACC. The loss drops Maryland’s record to 8-9 overall, 2-5 in the conference. UVa’s victory marks the first time the Cavaliers have defeated the Terrapins since November 22, 1991, ending what was nearly a seven-year losing streak.

Virginia will return to action on Friday, (Oct. 16) when the Cavaliers travel to Tallahassee, Fla. to face the Florida State Seminoles. The match will be held at Tully Gymnasium and is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. Maryland will return to action on Sunday, (Oct. 18) when the Terrapins meet FSU in Tallahassee. That match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
