BLACKSBURG, Va. — The University of Virginia volleyball team dropped its first game (5-15) to Virginia Tech, before rallying to win the next three games (17-15, 15-2, 15-6) in front of 589 spectators at Cassell Coliseum.

Mary Frances Scott, UVa’s all-time assists leader, paced the Cavalier offense as she recorded game-highs with 45 assists and 20 digs to led UVa. Andrea Fischer gathered a game-high 18 kills to go along with five digs, while the trio of Claire Folga (11 kills, 9 digs), Katie Jones (11 digs, 9 kills) and Jessica Parsons (10 kills, 6 blocks) posted solid numbers for Virginia. Deanna Zwarich (5 kills, 2 blocks), Whitney Bilger (2 kills, 2 digs), Amanda Wells (6 digs) and Kristi Winters (3 digs) contributed in UVa’s 3-1 victory.

Virginia Tech was led by Britton Julian’s 36 assists, Meredith Braine’s 17 digs and Corrie Bundy’s 13 kills.

With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 5-1 overall, while the loss drops Virginia Tech’s record to 1-3. The Cavaliers will return to action on Friday, (Sept 11) when UVa begins competition in the Pepperdine Tournament in Malibu, Calif. Virginia will open play against Pepperdine (5:00 p.m.), before facing Akron (12:00 p.m.) and UC Irvine (7:00 p.m.) on Saturday.
