CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — WNIS Radio (790 AM) in Norfolk, Va., has signed a three-year agreement with the University of Virginia to carry Cavalier football and basketball broadcasts through the 2001-2002 seasons.

WNIS, one of four stations owned by Sinclair Communications in the Tidewater area, just completed its third year as a member of the Virginia Sports Network. Sister station WTAR (850 AM) has been associated with the University of Virginia for more than 20 years.

“This is a very valuable partnership,” said Jerry Del Core, WNIS general manager. “We are thrilled with the new agreement and proud to support Virginia football and basketball.”

The agreement between WNIS and Cavalier Sports Marketing, which operates the Virginia Sports Network, includes airing all pregame and postgame shows associated with the game day broadcasts. “Cavalier Call-In” with UVa head football coach George Welsh and men’s head basketball coach Pete Gillen will also be heard on WNIS during the football and basketball seasons.

“The Tidewater area is an important recruiting area for us,” Welsh said. “It’s great to know we have an affiliate like WNIS as part of our team.”

Virginia Athletic Director Terry Holland agrees.

“Hampton Roads is a vital area for the University of Virginia, both in ticket sales and fund raising,” Holland said. “WNIS allows us to maintain a high level of visibility throughout this highly populated area of the state.”

Virginia opens the 1999 football season on September 4 against the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C.
