CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels used a four goal outburst in two-and-a-half-minutes to break open a close game and defeat the sixth-ranked Cavaliers 12-6. Carolina’s Tricia Cummings had a pair of goals in that blast.
The Cavaliers got on the board first with a goal from senior captain Peggy Boutilier (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country). Carolina answered with Erin McGinnis’ first of her game-high four goals to tie the game, but Cavalier senior captain Kara Ariza (Lansdowne, Pa./Penn Wood) put Virginia up 2-1 three minutes later. The Tar Heels scored two straight to go up 3-2, but senior captain Beth Potter (Swarthmore, Pa./Ridley) converted a free position to tie the score at 3 at the half.
North Carolina’s McGinnis scored in the first minute of the second half to put the Tar Heels up 4-3, but Boutilier scored on a free position five minutes later to tie the score. The Tar Heels then went on a five-goal tear to break open the game, including the four-goal blast. Mia Mooney (Penn Valley, Pa./Shipley) stopped the bleeding with an unassisted dodge at the 12:16 mark to cut the score to 9-5, but the Tar Heels scored three more before Ariza added her second goal with 23 seconds left for the final tally.
Defensively the Cavaliers were led by Samm Taylor (Springfield, Va./Robinson) who had three caused turnovers and scooped up five ground balls. Heather Castle (Timonium, Md./Notre Dame Prep) made five saves while allowing seven goals before giving way to back up Francis Segarra (Glen Mills, Pa./West Chester East) at the 19 minute mark . Segarrra allowed five goals while making two saves.
