CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The top-ranked Virginia Cavaliers, who won the 1998 ACC Women’s Lacrosse Tournament, have been given the top seed in the 1998 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse National Collegiate tournament. The field, as announced by NCAA Committee Chair Kathy Krannebitter of West Chester, welcomes three new participants in the field as it expands to 12 teams for the first time in 12 years.

The 15-2 Cavaliers, the top seed, will face the winner of Georgetown/Princeton on Saturday, May 9 in Charlottesville. Game time for the quarterfinal matchup is as yet to be determined. The Hoyas and the Tigers will meet in Princeton on Wednesday, May 6.

The Cavaliers defeated Georgetown 16-8 in Washington, D.C. on March 14 and Princeton 10-4 in Princeton on April 3. In the IWLCA poll from April 27, Georgetown checks in at #9 with a 9-6 record and Princeton is #7 with a 11-4 record. Princeton defeated Georgetown 6-5 on March 21 at Princeton.

This marks the third time that the Cavaliers have been tabbed as the top team in the field. The two previous times, 1991 and 1993, the Cavaliers won the NCAA title. This is Virginia’s 11th
