Women's Lacrosse Powers Past William and Mary, 11-8

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The sixth-ranked Virginia women’s lacrosse team stormed out to a quick 4-0 lead against eighth-ranked William & Mary and held on for the 11-8 win in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers were led for the second consecutive game by junior attack Mia Mooney (Penn Valley, Pa./Shipley) who scored her second consecutive hat trick and added an assist to pace the Cavalier attack.

Kelly Allenbach (West Chester, Pa./W. C. Henderson)’s goal 16 seconds into the game from senior captain Kara Ariza (Lansdowne, Pa./Penn Wood) gave the Cavaliers a lead they would not relinquish. Virginia added three more goals in the first ten minutes, including a goal and an assist from senior captain Beth Potter (Swarthmore, Pa./Ridley), forcing the Tribe to take a time out.

After the time out, the Tribe’s Dani Vissers scored the first of her three goals to put William & Mary on the board. Potter scored her second goal five minutes later to push the cushion back to four at 5-1. The Tribe went on a 3-1 run of their own in the last 12 minutes as Lindsay Rademaker scored twice and Molly Renehan added a tally while Virginia freshman Mills Hook (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s) added her second goal of the game to make the game 6-4 at halftime.

The Tribe cut the deficit to one less than a minute into the second half as Vissers connected again. But the Cavaliers responded with three goals in three minutes, including two by Mooney, to push the margin back to four at 9-5. Vissers scored again for the Tribe to stop the Cavalier rally, but Ariza’s goal with just over 11 minutes remaining gave the Cavaliers a third four-goal lead and forced the Tribe to call time out. William and Mary scored two goals in 90 seconds to cut the deficit to two with five minutes remaining, but the Cavaliers got an insurance goal from senior captain Peggy Boutilier (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country), who scored a goal with two seconds left on the clock for the final score of 11-8.

Defensively, the Cavaliers were led by Amy Fromal (Folsom, Pa./Ridley)’s five ground balls. Samm Taylor (Springfield, Va./Robinson) had three caused turnovers and five draw controls for the Cavaliers.

The Cavaliers return to action on Saturday as they host ACC-rival and top-ranked North Carolina at 2:00.
