NORFOLK, Va – Sarah Gercke (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne’s-Belfield) scored a pair of goals five minutes apart in the first half to help the Cavaliers take a 3-0 lead, but the Hoos defense had to step up to hold off the Old Dominion Monarchs 4-3 today at Foreman Field. Virginia scored its fourth goal with 4:01 remaining in the first half and had to hold off a patient Old Dominion attack to put together their third win of the season.

Gercke scored off a feed from Mills Hook (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s) at the 26:03 mark to give the Cavaliers the early lead. On the ensuing draw, Ashley Widger (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) gained control and flipped it to Amy Fromal (Folsom, Pa./Ridley). Gercke scored her second goal on a crease feed from Jess Hull (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) four minutes later as the Hoos went up 3-0.

But two minutes later ODU’s Sue Wolfgang scored on an isolation to put the Monarchs on the board. Her teammate Sarah Mindick cut the deficit to 3-2 on her own challenge at 11:24, but the Cavalier defense came alive and kept the Monarchs off the board for the rest of the half.

With 4:01 remaining in the first half, Meredith Elwell (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) took a feed from Mia Mooney (Rosemont, Pa./Shipley) to the cage for what would prove to be the game-winner.

Old Dominion cut the deficit to 4-3 as Mindick fed Kailynne Ross at 13:03, but that was to be the last goal of the game.

The Cavaliers outshot the Monarchs 27-10, but ODU’s Laurie Kohler stopped 15 Virginia shots. Francis Segarra (Glen Mills, Pa./Glen Mills) made five saves, and Gina Sambus (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) led the way for the Cavaliers with four caused turnovers. Gercke scooped up five ground balls while Mooney had four.

Virginia returns to action on Sunday, March 14 as the Cavaliers travel to Baltimore to face the UMBC Retrievers. Game time in Catonsville is 5:00 pm.
